The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard is a set of collaborative security requirements for the protection of credit card transactions and cardholder data. The standard was initiated by VISA in 2001 and merged with a similar program by MasterCard in 2004. Other major credit card providers, including American Express and Discover have since adopted the PCI standard.

Currently, less than one in five large merchants comply with the PCI standard, according to VISA. Anecdotal comments by auditors suggest the actual compliance ratio may be closer to one in ten. Some observers say that PCI is too complex and overly specific in technical requirements for security. Completeness is another hurdle for if a merchant is non-compliant in just one area, that deficiency entirely voids official compliance with the standard. Despite these concerns, compliance largely follows familiar best practices commonly used by organizations in other business sectors to effectively secure financial operations and protect sensitive personal data. There are many aspects to information security, but the heart of securing credit card-based transactions focuses on databases used in those financial systems.

This webcast will be a primer on PCI best practices for financial database security – particularly the protection of stored payment data.

Attendees will learn:

  • What is PCI? What does it mean to me?
  • How does PCI Compliance = Stronger Security
  • How to Build and Maintain Secure Applications
  • How to Protect Cardholder Databases
  • How to Maintain Database Vulnerability Management
  • How to Implement Strong Access Control
  • How to Monitor and Test Applications
